Provo Swim Academy, saving lives through clean water and sanitation

PROVO, UT May 26, 2011 - Each year, over 3.5 million people die worldwide due to water related diseases. Even more shocking, the lack of clean water is an epidemic that seems to target children. A staggering 84% of those water related deaths are among children age 0 - 14 years.

Provo Swim Academy owner Erina Williams remarked, “We found ourselves anxious to give back and do something related to water since that’s where we spend most of our days. We, as Americans, take for granted just how readily available clean drinking water is to us. In fact, we have so much clean water that we are able to fill and empty countless pools each year. That’s why we’ve decided to donate 5% of all our revenue to an organization dedicated to providing sustainable sources of clean water to families in developing countries.”

Erina and her team found their solution in Water.org. Transforming communities in Africa, South Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, the team at Water.org not only drills wells but teaches proper sanitation and hygiene, involves the community to give them a sense of ownership and is pioneering innovative micro-financing tools to empower the poor to help themselves.

What donations to Water.org are able to achieve:

  • $25 provides one person with clean water for life
  • $200 provides a family in Honduras with a water tap and toilet
  • $1,000 provides public water points and latrines to a village of 400 in Bangladesh

Added Erina, “When we started Provo Swim, we set out with the objective to help swimmers reach their goals and save lives. We originally thought we’d save lives just by teaching the young to swim. We have broadened our horizons. Each time that we sign up a new client, 5% goes to help young children in other communities to have the opportunity to live and reach their goals, whatever they may be.”
